LABOR WELCOMES DELAYED DECISION
Labor welcomes the Turnbull Government’s announcement of a permanent Deputy Commissioner for Veterans Affairs’ in the Northern Territory.
Labor has long been advocating for the Northern Territory to have its own, dedicated Deputy Commissioner, despite reports the Government was not going to fill this position.
A Deputy Commissioner will help provide support and assistance to the many veterans and their families of the Northern Territory.
As one of Australia’s largest Defence and veterans’ communities it is right Territorian’s have access to proper support networks, and a Deputy Commissioner of their own is just one example of this.
Local Labor Member for Solomon, Luke Gosling OAM, has been very vocal fighting for the reinstatement of the NT Deputy Commissioner position.
“This is a great win for the Territory,” Mr Gosling said. “I have been working with ex-service organisations to make it clear to the Minister how important it is to give veterans of the NT the same level of service as those in other states.
“We have a large proportion of Australian Defence Force personnel and veterans and they deserve the best possible frontline support and access to services.
“It is only right the Turnbull Government came to its senses and reinstated this Department of Veteran’s Affairs senior position.”
