TURNBULL GOVERNMENT: STOP SECOND RATE TREATMENT OF NT
The Turnbull Government needs to start taking the Northern Territory seriously said Labor representatives after a series of meetings and briefings in Darwin and Katherine this week.
The Turnbull Government needs to start boosting the NT economy by providing better access to Defence contracts for local small and medium businesses.
And it needs to start listening to people in the Northern Territory affected by Defence’s use of PFAS.
In Darwin, Ms Brodtmann and Mr Gosling spoke with businesses about their disappointment at constantly missing out on Defence contracts in favour of larger businesses, mostly based interstate. This was a message echoed in Ms Brodtmann’s meetings with the local business chamber and council CEO in Katherine.
Ms Brodtmann and Mr Gosling also met with Larrakia Nation, the major Indigenous stakeholder that delivers services to itinerant people camping around Rapid Creek. The meeting reinforced the need for constant communication and consultation from RAAF Base Darwin during the ongoing PFAS investigations.
At RAAF Base Tindal, Ms Brodtmann was briefed on the PFAS investigation area and the timeline and process involved in the next phase of testing.
Labor once again stands with the NT Government and calls on the Turnbull Government to allow voluntary blood tests for all affected communities in the NT.
And Labor again calls on the Turnbull Government to fast track the investigation process, particularly in Katherine.
The Top End has seen a $1.7 billion cut in GST with the added insult of no new investment in infrastructure.
The Turnbull Government needs to stop treating the NT like a poor cousin.
