JENNY MCALLISTER

SENATOR FOR NEW SOUTH WALES

LUKE GOSLING OAM

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR SOLOMON

A re-elected Albanese Labor Government will invest $1.8 million to support the completion of a multi-purpose facility in Palmerston, led by the Islamic Society of Palmerston.

The new centre will be much more than a building — it will be a vibrant hub for the local community, a place for connection, faith, mentorship, and education. Crucially, it will also be built to serve as a cyclone shelter for the whole community, offering a safe and secure refuge for Territorians during severe weather events.

Labor’s $1.8 million election commitment will ensure the facility’s roof meets cyclone safety standards, turning a strong community vision into a safe and resilient reality.

Construction is already underway powered by the fundraising efforts of the Islamic Society and the local community. Territorians know the power of community, and they know the threat of cyclones and this project brings both together.

The Albanese Labor Government remains committed to delivering essential infrastructure that supports Territorians now and into the future.

Consistent with past practice, election commitments will be delivered in line with Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles.

Attributable to Senator Jenny McAllister:

“The Albanese Government is committed to supporting the vibrancy of local communities and their safety during natural disasters.

“This commitment from the Albanese Government will ensure the facility can be used as a cyclone centre to keep the community safe in times of emergency.

“The commitment comes on top of our record investment in resilience funding."

Attributable to Luke Gosling, Member for Solomon:

“It’s been 50 years since Cyclone Tracy hit the shores of Darwin and Palmerston. Last year we commemorated all that was lost but also connected with all we have built back together as a community.

“This investment is a reminder of how important it is to build resilient infrastructure that can withstand extreme weather events. A reminder to be prepared for anything.

“The Palmerston multi-purpose facility will become a community hub providing a hall and sporting facilities – a place for Territorians of all ages to come together and enjoy.”

Attributable to Chowdhury Sadaruddin, President of the Islamic Society of Palmerston:

"The larger community of Moulden, Palmerston, and Darwin Muslim community thank Luke Gosling for his generous support to commit $1.8 million for the Islamic Society of Palmerston (ISP).

“This funding will help us build a community hall and a cyclone shelter. ISP has already spent $4 million dollars raised by the community.

“This grant will allow us to finish the project and provide a safe place for the Palmerston community during emergencies."
